The Truman Show Paper

The Truman Show Paper

“In case I don’t see you, good afternoon, good evening and good night.” Those were the last words spoken by Truman before he left the world he thought he knew. That was how the movie ended. I didn’t enjoy how the movie ended like that. There are three reasons why; the relationship between Truman and Sylvia was never established. The viewers of the Truman show don’t seem to have much to say and don’t really care that the show was actually over. Finally, what I thought was the worst were the last words he said.
The whole world could tell that Truman was in love with Sylvia, and us the viewers of the movie could also tell that Sylvia was in love with Truman. We never got to see that relationship happen. Sure we saw Sylvia running out the door and Truman leaving the dome which he had been in all his life, but that’s basically it. Common does nobody believe in happy endings anymore? It may just be because I am a girl and love romantic movies but that’s just what I think. It also annoys me because we never know the journey Sylvia goes on to go and find Truman. We know she goes out her door, but that doesn’t necessarily mean she was going to him, she could have gone out to get some milk. Yupp milk. Or maybe she went to go get Truman, but we will never exactly know for sure. So, we never exactly know what happens to Sylvia, but we have NO idea what happens to Truman we he gets out. Maybe there is a mob outside the dome waiting for him. Maybe a gets attacked by a huge bird. Maybe he goes and finds Sylvia. That again we will never know for sure.
Right after the audience witnesses Truman leave the dome after over 30 years of his life, they just seem to look for what else is on TV. All of his ‘fans’ aren’t worried about what happens next in his life, they are more worried about what shows are on other channels at the moment. I guess that’s our society. I just think that maybe they should have cared at least a little bit and been upset or happy for him. At least someone should have said something to show the world genially cared about Truman. But it was all just entertainment for them. Which I guess was the whole purpose that Christof created the show, it’s just a little upsetting thinking no one actually cares about him. They should have done a little montage of everyone’s surprised facial expressions and done how every is going to miss him or some big event is going to happen next. I just all in think that the viewers should maybe show some respect for him since he did entertain them for over 30 years, and all of his life.
The very last words Truman says before were the same words he said every single day. They could have had a nice interesting saying, something clever, or even a nice hand gesture. It was just another average day for him, when in reality it was the first day of the rest of his life unwatched in a dome. They could have changed it up for him a little bit, or just not said anything at all. Also him saying it was confusing, and didn’t really make much sense. It was just randomly put into the ending. I was surprised that he understood what was going and wasn’t the least bit confused. The last words as much as I didn’t like them, were very memorable though.
I didn’t really enjoy the end of the movie because of the relationship between Sylvia and Truman, the viewers’ reactions, and his last words. In case I don’t see you, good afternoon, good evening, and goodnight.
